Basic vs comprehensive health insurance for foreigners
► Basic insurance covers emergency care
Necessary and emergency medical insurance Czech Republic covers the cost of acute medical treatment, including drugs prescription and acute dental treatment. If it is taken out with the extension for the Schengen area, it also covers care outside the Czech Republic. The insured person's health status is not required before the contract is concluded and the insurance is also available for children from 12 months of age. Discounts for students are available under the insurance. For example, in the event of an emergency such as fever and sore throat, the insurance covers the first visit to the doctor and the cost of prescribed medication, but further visits to the doctor are not covered.
Insurance limits include up to CZK 1.600.000 for medical care and transportation, CZK 3.000 for dental care and the same amount for outpatient drugs prescription.
► Comprehensive insurance also includes preventive programmes and dental care
Comprehensive health insurance for foreigners provides extended health care beyond necessary and urgent care. In addition to coverage for sudden illnesses and accidents in the Schengen area, it also includes repatriation or transportation of remains to the home country. For example, in the event of an acute illness such as fever and sore throat, the insurance covers the cost of the first visit to the doctor and prescribed medication, as well as any follow-ups related to the illness.
It also offers the option of additional civil liability insurance with limits of CZK 1.000.000 for bodily injury, CZK 500.000 for damage to property and CZK 250.000 for subsequent financial loss. The insurance limits are set at CZK 10.000.000 for medical care and transport, CZK 15.000 for dental care and CZK 10.000 for outpatient prescriptions.
Treatment without health insurance
Treatment without health insurance can be very risky and costly for foreigners in the Czech Republic. In the event of illness or injury, the cost of treatment without insurance can reach high amounts that can put a strain on personal budgets.
Health insurance not only provides financial protection against unexpected healthcare costs, but also ensures access to necessary medical care without unnecessary complications. Taking out insurance is therefore not only a legal obligation for most foreigners, but also an important protection for their health and financial security.
